Verizon Wireless ‘COLT’ Offers Enhanced Capacity for Ohio State University Football Fans

Verizon Wireless has installed a temporary cell site — called a COLT, or Cell On Light Truck — near The Ohio State University’s Ohio Stadium to provide additional network capacity just in time for football season. The site will increase capacity in the southern portion of the stadium and the area immediately outside the stadium.

A COLT is a fully functional, mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity in a given area, thereby enabling customers attending home football games in the area to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

“Ensuring our customers can count on their wireless devices for communication, news and more at major events is part of our ongoing commitment to network reliability,” said Mark Frazier – president, Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. “We look at how our customers’ usage patterns are changing at events like these and utilize this information to make sure we stay well ahead of their demand.”

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has deployed its 4G LTE Network in 117 metropolitan areas coast to coast, including Columbus, covering more than half of all Americans. During 2011, the company will continue to expand its 4G footprint, bringing its 4G LTE network to more than 185 million Americans by year-end. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE wireless network is the fastest and most advanced 4G network in America and offers speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G network.

The company’s ongoing network investment in Ohio now totals nearly $2 billion. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed — $6 billion on average every year — to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.

Verizon FiOS TV Launches New Video-on-Demand Documentaries From SnagFilms on Friday, October 22

Verizon has announced that FiOS TV subscribers will be among the first to get a new selection of documentaries available on demand when the company launches SnagFilms on Friday, October 22.

SnagFilms’ initial lineup consists of 10 films, which will be joined by up to five more by year-end. All SnagFilms programming can be found as a branded SnagFilms folder within the “Foreign & Indies” folder on FiOS TV VOD.

“We consistently look to give our FiOS TV customers the best in on-demand programming, including more than 1,000 movies every month,” said Tricia Lynch, director of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon. “SnagFilms makes a great addition to our growing VOD offering, and we’re excited for our customers to enjoy their award-winning documentaries.”

* ‘From the Mara to the Marathon’ – Anthony Edwards travels to the Maasai Mara in Kenya to bring a Maasai to run in the New York City Marathon.

SnagFilms joins FiOS TV’s extensive VOD service, which offers 18,000 monthly titles including 3,300 in high definition. NFL Network To Launch ‘NFL RedZone Channel’ on Sep. 13.

NFL Network has announced that it will launch the new ‘NFL RedZone channel’ for 2009-10 season on Sep. 13. The NFL RedZone channel will bring fans every touchdown of every game on Sunday afternoons.

NFL RedZone channel is produced by NFL Network, whips around every NFL game on Sunday afternoons delivering the touchdowns and most exciting moments live and in high definition. When a team goes inside the 20-yard line, fans see the crucial plays as they happen. The channel keeps fans up-to-date in real time, switching from game to game with live look-ins, highlights and a chance to see every important play.

NFL Network President and CEO Steve Bornstein, said: “NFL RedZone is one of the most exciting new products for football fans since the invention of instant replay. We are currently in discussions with distributors so fans will be able to watch this new channel on Sunday afternoons.”

NFL Network’s NFL RedZone channel will be a different channel than DirecTV’s Red Zone Channel, which is part of DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket package.

Scott Hanson is the host of NFL RedZone moving from NFL Network’s NFL GameDay Morning on Sundays to the new state-of-the-art NFL RedZone studio currently being constructed at NFL Network headquarters in Los Angeles.

Verizon has announced that its FiOS TV subscribers have more programming choices on video-on-demand (VOD). Verizon FiOS TV VOD subscribers can watch the AMC hit show “Mad Men,” shop any time with HSN, and watch classic and contemporary Disney movies and animated shorts from Disney Family Movies. The 20th Century Fox new film releases will also be available in high-definition on Verizon FiOS TV VOD.

Further a variety of other new VOD programming: Spanish-language shows from Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision; a variety of films from Cinetic Film Buff; and favorite old movies from American Pop Classics. Verizon Adds NHL Center Ice and Soon Add NHL Network

Verizon has added NHL Center Ice to the FiOS TV lineup and also will add NHL Network very soon. NHL Center Ice will present 40 out-of-market NHL games per week and select games from the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Verizon also to broadcast some of the selected games in high-definition.

NHL Network to broadcast all the 75 live regular-season games in 2008-09 in HD. NHL programming brings original programming, documentaries, unparalleled analysis and highlights, live events, and the best in vintage games and features. Verizon has announced that it offers subscribers and small businesses in Bellingham with more programming choices with FiOS TV. Verizon is the only provider to offer television service delivered over the nation’s most advanced all-fiber network directly connecting to millions of individual homes and businesses. Verizon is also negotiating with several other communities in Massachusetts to offer advanced all-fiber network. Verizon Communications Offers 100 HD Channels in New York Area

Verizon Communications said in a press release on Monday, July 28 that the cable operator offers 100 High-Definition channels in the New York area. Verizon further stated that the service will offer 100 HD channels, giving customers more HD than Cablevision or Time Warner Cable. These new HD channels offered are to existing FiOS TV markets in the New York metropolitan area, including parts of Long Island, the suburbs just north of the city, and northern New Jersey.
